In 1997, Roscoe A. Maloney, the founder of Touchwood Group, identified that trees of high commercial value can be planted and harvested as an investment product.
After much research and planning Touchwood Investments Limited was incorporated and registered in Sri Lanka in 1999. With Board of Investment approval to plant 2000 acres of mahogany trees over 20 years Touchwood began to market the product as an investment to local and overseas clients.
The company and its products were well accepted because of the valuable social contribution made by helping to prevent the destruction of natural rainforests while making a profit.
Sales and profits from Touchwood’s operations in Sri Lanka were good and all stakeholders were optimistic for the company’s future growth. In 2002 the company decided on a public listing on the Colombo Stock Exchange. The offering was oversubscribed.
Good profits and 20 percent increase in dividends year on year plus consistent operational achievements have made Touchwood a stable and credible company in Sri Lanka. As a result the share value has soared over the last two years.
To penetrate the international market Touchwood Forestry Co., Ltd. was established in Thailand in 2004 with Thailand Board of Investment privileges. In the same year a sales and marketing office was established in Dubai to penetrate the Middle East market and Touchwood Eurasia started marketing products to expatriates in Thailand.
In October 2004 Touchwood Limited was registered in Hong Kong because of its stable economic reputation and favourable economic policies. Touchwood Limited is now the group’s holding company and responsible for marketing Touchwood products internationally.
